Anna Sophia Defant is a versatile artist with skills as a pianist, improviser, singer, and composer. Originally from Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer in Salzburg, she studied classical piano at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw), with Antoinette Van Zabner during her bachelor's studies and Albert Sassmann during her master's studies.

Her musical journey not only involved traditional training but also various workshops, including those with Christian Lillinger, Vincent Pongrácz, and Clemens Wenger. Her exploration of contemporary music during her studies led her to the world of free improvised music, and with the duo søch, she found a compositional framework for her improvisational work.

Anna Sophia Defant has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including Christian Reiner, Kenji Herbert, Raphael Preuschl, Bernhard Hammer, Vincent Pongrácz, Lukas Aichinger, Michael Prowaznik, Isabella Forciniti, Jake Mann, Julia Bayer, Clemens Wenger, Franz Hautzinger, Tobias Pöcksteiner, Veronika Hanl, Julia Romana, Jakob Gnigler, and Flora Geißelbrecht.

Her performances have taken place in various formations at events such as the International Jazz Festival Saalfelden, Brucknerhaus Linz, ORF Radiokulturhaus Wien, Porgy & Bess, Jazzclub Zwe, and brut nordwest.


In addition to her musical endeavors, Anna Sophia Defant also works as a medical doctor.
